WEST PLAINS R-7 SCHOOLS
REGISTRATION AND BEGINNING OF THE YEAR INFORMATION
2009-2010 SCHOOL YEAR

West Plains R-7 would like to welcome students back to school! In this release, you will find useful information needed to make the first weeks of school smooth and successful. Also, you’ll find a calendar that will help guide you through the next few weeks.

In preparation for the first day of classes on Thursday, Aug. 20, 2009, West Plains R-7 Schools have announced the following:
2009-2010 SCHOOL CALENDAR: The 2009-2010 school calendar is available online at www.zizzers.org/calendar.

SCHOOL SUPPLY LISTS
School Supply lists are currently available at Walmart in West Plains. For more information, contact your building.

WEST PLAINS HIGH SCHOOL
WPHS REGISTRATION: Wednesday, Aug. 12 & Thursday, Aug. 13
Wednesday, Aug. 12: Grade 12, 8 a.m.; Grade 11, 10 a.m.
Thursday, Aug. 13: Grade 10, 8 a.m.; Grade 9, 10 a.m.
NEW (WPHS) STUDENT REGISTRATION:
Registration for students new to the district will be held from 9 a.m. to noon, Monday, Aug. 10 and Tuesday, Aug. 11.

HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS: For registration, West Plains High School students should report to the south entrance of the high school building on the designated day and at the designated time for their grade level. Freshman (9th) students and students new to the district in grades 9 through 12 should be prepared to pay a $20.00 book deposit at registration. This deposit is refundable if all books and other items issued to the student are returned in good condition. The 2008-2009 yearbook may be picked up at registration.

WPHS school photos will be taken Wednesday, Aug. 26.

WEST PLAINS MIDDLE SCHOOL
Students going into grades 5 through 8 who were in the West Plains School system last year will NOT register at West Plains Middle School prior to the first day. All records and information will be carried over from last year or transferred from West Plains Elementary and South Fork Elementary Schools.

A packet containing student information will be sent home the first day of school for parents to review, make changes as necessary and return so records may be updated. It is essential that parents return the information to the school even if all information is correct.

M.S. SCHEDULES:
It will not be necessary for middle school students to pick up schedules this year.
Schedules will be mailed the second week of August.

NEW (M.S.) STUDENT REGISTRATION:
Students new to the district that will attend West Plains Middle School should register at the middle school Wednesday, Aug. 12, and Thursday, Aug. 13. Registration each day will be from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Students need not accompany parents or guardians registering for them.

WEST PLAINS ELEMENTARY AND SOUTH FORK ELEMENTARY
New students at West Plains Elementary School and South Fork Elementary School should register at their respective schools after Aug. 1. Elementary students need not accompany parents or guardians registering for them. There will be no registration for Elementary students who were enrolled at West Plains Elementary or South Fork Elementary during the 2008-2009 school year. Children enrolling in Kindergarten must be five years old before Aug. 1, 2009. Parents must bring a birth certificate, immunization record, Social Security number and proof of residency when enrolling students.

Kindergarten Orientation and Open House at West Plains Elementary will be held at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 13. Kindergarten will not participate in the Aug. 18 open house for grades one through four.

South Fork Elementary will hold its Kindergarten Orientation and Open House at 5:30 p.m. Monday, Aug. 17.

Class lists for grades K-4 for West Plains Elementary will be posted in the school office Monday, Aug. 10. Class lists for South Fork Elementary students will be available during Open House Aug. 18.

Elementary school photos will be taken Friday, Sept. 4.


ALL NEW ELEMENTARY, MIDDLE SCHOOL, AND HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS: In order to be eligible for enrollment in the West Plains R-7 School System, students must meet the following requirements: Students must meet all immunization requirements before entering school. Each child must be a resident and reside with their parent or legal guardian within the
West Plains School District - Proof of Residency is Required, or: (a.) Be assigned by the county court. (b.) Live in a district not operating a high school where tuition arrangements have been previously made. (c.) All others must make arrangements with the Superintendent of schools before enrollment.

OPEN HOUSE: Kindergarten Open House and Orientation:
West Plains Elementary: 6:30-8 p.m. Aug. 13
South Fork Elementary: 5:30-7 p.m. Aug. 17

Open House will be held at the West Plains R-7 Schools Tuesday, Aug. 18, as follows: South Fork Elementary (Grades 1-6): 5-6:30 p.m.
West Plains Elementary School (Grades 1-4): 5:30-7 p.m.
West Plains Middle School: 6-7:30 p.m.
West Plains High School: 6:30-8 p.m.

All students, parents, and patrons are encouraged to attend.

SCHOOL MEDICATION POLICY: Students' medications should be given during home hours if at all possible. This decreases the chance of errors such as missed or forgotten doses. MEDICATIONS WILL ONLY BE GIVEN DURING SCHOOL HOURS BY COMPLYING WITH THESE GUIDELINES:
1. Medication consent form completed and signed.
2. Prescription medications must be in the original container with the label intact and legible. Ask your pharmacist for a bottle for school use. Medications given on a regular basis (inhaler, Ritalin, etc.) must have the newest refill and send no more than a month's supply at a time. Medications will only be given during school time if prescription states: at noon, every four hours or every six hours. Three times a day medication will not be given during school hours.
3. Over-the-Counter medication (other than those listed on the Medication Consent Form) must come in the original container and must have a note from a Physician stating: student's name, name of drug, dose to be given, and times to be given.
4. All medications must be turned in at the nurse's office along with a dated note giving permission to administer the medication. Medication such as Ritalin, Dexedrine and Codeine Products including cough medicine, may not be sent on the bus.
5. Medication bottles will be sent home when medication course is completed or
expires.

INSURANCE: The KIDGUARD student accident insurance program endorsed by the Missouri Association of School Administrators will be available to all students grades K - 12 at the following rates:
Schooltime Plan $12.00 (covers all sports except varsity tackle football)
24-Hour Coverage Option $40.00
Increased Dental Option $ 3.00
In-Hospital Sickness Option $38.00

Insurance flyers will be distributed to high school students at registration and to middle school and elementary students during the first week of classes.

TRANSPORTATION:
Bus route information will be released in the West Plains Daily Quill approximately one week prior to the first day of classes and are available online at www.zizzers.org/transportation.

LUNCH AND BREAKFAST PROGRAM:
Lunch and breakfast will be available to all students K-12 at the following prices: Student Lunch $1.75
Breakfast $1.00
Reduced Price Lunch $0.40
Reduced Price Breakfast $0.30
Extra milk $0.30
All students who were eligible for free or reduced lunches during the 2008-2009 school year will be allowed to continue in the free or reduced lunch program while current applications are being processed. West Plains R-7 allows a 30-day grace period for returning program participants at the beginning of each school year. The school encourages all families, regardless of eligibility to participate in the program, to complete the free- and reduced-lunch application. Only one application per family within the R-7 district is necessary. Applications from rural K-8 schools do not transfer to West Plains High School. A separate application must be filled out by families with students in the high school who do not reside within the R-7 district.
